Why is it that Fort Wayne chooses to spend as little money as possible. Carroll High School is undergoing an expansion, again. Why is it that our city plans only a few years down the road?
"Construction on the expansion, if approved, would begin in March 2007, and cost about $64 million. Almost 1,500 students are enrolled at Carroll, which is projected to grow by another 600 students by 2010."
600 students in the next 3 years. Or as I look at it, a 40% increase in population at Carroll in the next 3 years. Does this district think - "Hey, we've got to stop growing sometime." Or does this district have plans to stop growth or do they think there is there a lack of farm land which will inevitably become subject to more sprawl?
Does Fort Wayne need to be home of the state's largest high school? I guess thats one thing we can brag about. When we are worried about the quality of education, we turn the blind eye and pack as many people into a school as possible. Screw it man, lets go state school on it - Carroll State Universitatis North East Campus.
64M intead of 100M for a brand new school - something that is going to need to be built anyways GUARANTEED, not maybe after the school hits 2100 students in 2010, but maybe in 3 more years when the student body is approaching 3000 kids.
I guess we are going to take the same opinion as the Harrison Square when we say, "Why would we spend 100M on something that is only going to be use 180 days out of the year"

I hate schools. I nevar went and nevar want too.
They are a waste of time and my hard earned muney.
They should bulldose Carroll and build some development. That there land is werth a lot of money and I want sum of it.
I was part of the remonstrance that tried to get NACS to build a new High School rather then expand...
We were beaten about 4 to 1...
Mike Sylvester
First a new library and now a new school?
This town is crazy.
We don't need no education
Mike -
Have you seen the movie "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad World"?
Every time I see your last name, I think of that movie... SYLVESTER!!!!
ANYWHOO - They'll all pay out the end in the end, right?
Mike, you need to run for school board again.
We need a new High Sckewl.
NACS is being cautious, and rightly so. The future enrollment estimates were made before Harrison Square was announced. Thousand will seek homes in the downtown to be nearer to this visionary, catalyst project, featuring a year-round multi-purpose park, in which baseball games will be played.

First of all, thank you for posting three times. Secondly, you really think that families with highschool students are going to move downtown into condos/lofts?
Sorry about the three posts and, yes, I do. Fort Wayne has a very family-friendly downtown and we are on our way to having one of the most child attractive downtowns in the midwest. Our great new library, the Lincoln museum, the Botanical Gardens, Headwaters Park and now the Baseball Stadium. Harrisison Square will draw lots of families downtown for wholesome entertainment! Their going to have fireworks shows and Easter egg hunts and picnics in the Park! I hear an ice cream shoppe and an arcade have already expressed interest in the new retail space.
This may serve as the catalyst to get things moving with the Old Fort, which was always a favorite with the kids. I forgot about Science Central and the new smoking ordinance, which will make downtown a lot safer for the children.
Well I'm a big advocate for HS and downtown in general, but when they talk about the condos, they have never mentioned families with high school kids. It has always been young professionals, young couples, and empty nesters. I just don't see families moving downtown to raise their kids - especially with the housing market of Fort Wayne.
I do hope I'm wrong, but lets be serious - They are shutting down Washington Elementary and not putting any money in Elmhurst. We're not exactly sending the message of "Move downtown - its a great way to educate your kids"
Also, I find it shocking that you think that the draw downtown will offset the growth near Huntertown and Aboite.
I feel that downtown living needs to shoot for that niche of people, and with cheap living anywhere in Fort Wayne, why would families pay a premium for real estate downtown, especially when people already think their dollars are stretched too thin - with the additional costs of raising kids.
Again, I am happy to see enthusiasm and positivity about the downtown area. I do hope you are right.
That's what is so exciting about Harrison Square. It says we are willing to invest in our children and our downtown. As more families come downtown, some of the seedier establisments will look elsewhere. Fort Wayne has always been a great place to raise children and this says we intend to stay that way.
You can read the 2006 Downtown Housing Potential Study (PDF) if you're really interested :)
Only 180 days a year? boondoggle!
I've read the study.
Potential is an essential word to look at here. You've got to break the mentality of buying houses.
I actually looked at dumping money into rehabbing a building downtown. But when purchasing a building and creating condos at $100 sqft. How many 160k 1000sqft condos do you think would sell?
If the demand is really there like the study suggests then a few condos in a good location should be able to sell.
If you look at the redevelopment issues in Indianapolis, families fled IPS and Carmel grew. With the high tax base created, I suspect FWCS will slowly die!
Who would want to put their children in FWCS? Parents natually want their children to excel, and therefore they want them to not only meet the basic requirements, but soar pass them! Yet in many FWCS the students are only taught to 'too the test', math, reading and spelling all day. NOTHING ELSE! Wonder why so many of the students act out, because they are board stiff!
