Museum lacked support of schools
Why didn’t Allen County schools support the Lincoln Museum by encouraging field trips to this facility? According to The Journal Gazette article, “Last day for Lincoln Museum” (June 30), I could find no local school districts in the list of organizations that support the Lincoln Museum by supplying the No. 1 need of attendance. Are there not enough questions on the ISTEP+ to justify field trips to the Lincoln Museum? Support does not just involve money. Does history matter for the students in Indiana anymore?
BARBARA W. CAMPBELL Fort Wayne
Well said, Ms. Campbell. It's a shame that Fort Wayne is losing such a great museum. In fact, the museum was the number one attraction in Fort Wayne according to Trip Advisor. It's even more of a shame that our own community couldn't support such a great museum. I remember yearly trips to the old Lincoln Museum site while attending FWCS. My Grandparents would drive up from Indianapolis to take my siblings and I to the museum every summer. They realized what a gem we had here in Fort Wayne. It's part of the reason why I love Presidential history so much. I shook my head and laughed when I read about the huge line of people waiting to enter the museum on its last day. The usual Fort Wayne complaints don't fly here. There is a parking lot in front of the museum. Admission was only $5. The museum was accessible from all areas of the city (Clinton and Laffayette Streets.) Fast Food restaurants were located within walking (or drive thru.) Hell, you even got a free souvenier with admission!
It took the museum closing for all these people to show up, and all most of them could talk about was being "forced" to park on the street. What a shame.

The Miserable Minority
I could ramble on for hours about this issue but won't.
How many elected office holders do we have that have less then 20 years in living in Fort Wayne/Allen County? How many of them speak of protecting the history of Fort Wayne at all? How many people running for office do we ask what they know of Fort Wayne's history?
We see them running full speed ahead with our tax dollars to build a monument to themselves.
Many of these people, in leadership rolls, are only seeking fame or money for themselves. They could care less about the real people of Fort Wayne/Allen County.
Look at this stupid bridge mess. Look at the 911 call center. Look at Harrison Square that will suck tax blood from taxpayers for years. Look at the Grand Wayne center giving money away while it is loosing hundreds of thousands of dallars a year. Look at Maplecrest Exd and see how it will cost akk taxpayers but will only help a very few. Look at Headwaters Park and it is only available to those who want to rent it. Look at the Omni Source property deal.
Does anyone wonder why the leadership of the Lincoln are closing it down? I am not.
I also took my kids to the museum each summer and even donated money.
The whole situation makes me really upset.
It really sucks that the museum is really closing. What a shame is right. Shame on Fort Wayne for letting this slip away.
That was the number one attraction downtown and it will be moving away. Not good at all.
