My Polling

New Sentinel did a poll recently about HS - HERE

There are a ton of funny reasons people are refusing to go to games.

"The team will be long gone by the time I buy a ticket." How does that work?

"Redevelop the existing stadium. it is convenient where it is. downtown is not. Also, there is no parking downtown. Lastly, I resent having to pay taxes to operate the downtown garages, then having a private company charge me to park in those same garages, and collecting all of the money while bearing none of the load." And the parking at Memorial Coliseum is???

The funny thing is, is that if it is a night game at HS, then the parking will be FREE. Here's the kicker - you will probably have to walk a couple of blocks. GASP! I know, I know, its a lot to ask of people, but I urge you check out walking - you might enjoy it. I realize that another benefit to Memorial stadium is that if you show up early enough, you can get a parking spot that would rival the coveted front row at Walmart- but then again, if you park a block or two away - you don't run the risk of a foul ball nailing your windshield.

What also really gets me is that people are so stubborn and believe that HS is the wrong project - that they won't even go to a game. If you enjoyed games at Memorial Stadium - you are going to enjoy them has Harrison Square.

The only acceptable reason for people not wanting to attend games should be: "I do not enjoy baseball"

(Also, note the New Sentinel poll tampering claim)

Hell, traffic well be a nightmaire. That is no issue on Coliseum. Plus we can eat at Halls, Long Johns and Hooters right there heading west on 30.

The Sheriff will want nothing to di with the new stadium by Superior street. We'll have to have FWPD down there. And they won't want to come up 30 to patrol.

Big mess in my opinion.

Traffic is no issue on Coliseum? When was the last time you exited the parking lot after a Komet's game? There are only 3 exits.

Think about how many individual parking lots, metered spaces and exponential amounts of exits and directions to travel there are available downtown.

Multiple major roads with 4 and even 5 lanes travel through downtown. (Whoa, even wider than Coliseum Blvd.)

Parking is also free at after 430pm downtown (and weekends)as CFW mentioned, it will always be $4.00 at "The Slab."

To me, downtown sounds easier to enter/exit and much cheaper to park. Not to mention I'd rather visit the homegrown downtown restaurants such as 816 Pint & Slice, Toscani's and JK O'Donnells before I ever go to "Long Johns" (which no longer even exists), Halls, or especially Hooters.

Greg, you can't be serious.

I'm considering leaving Fort Wayne if people really think like you do.

I'm abivalent about Harrison Square. I'll probably go to as many games as I did at Memorial Coliseum (2-3 year).

In defense of Greg, however, I have been to many, many Komets games and exiting the parking lot is easy. I usually am still listening to the ten minute long post-game show when I get home just south of Wallen Road.

You're right about if I enjoyed games at Memorial Stadium I'll enjoy them at HS. I plan to continue to go. My big complaint is that this is being sold as an ecomomic development thing. When I go to a game, I go there to watch the game and eat a brat or dog or hamburger, just like I used to do with my kids over the years. I don't think I ever ate at a restaurant before or after the game (you drop plenty of bucks at a Wizards game). So ideas about people coming downtown to spend money on other things are questionable.

Anon -

I agree there are quite a few people that are accustomed to going to the game and leaving immediately after.

It is my hope that they are able to successfully add development around the stadium and bring great tenants to the retail space - in order for people to change their pre/post game activities.

The first comment is what really disturbs me about the negativity surrounds HS. The guy is completely ignorant and doesn't know where the stadium will actually be located. Its called Harrison Square, not Superior Square.

Just watch the traffic patterns now. People will not be able to leave the ball games or enter the ball games at harrison. We need more time to study the problem before we build it any farther.

The city planners will not do there homework on harrison. The problems will continue to get worse and more people will continue to leave the downtown area near harrison.

CFW,
There was negativity among HS supporters last year as well. Some commenters threatened to leave if the ballpark wasn't built. A whole lot of people took potshots at the city that they claimed to love.

To those who threaten to leave if they don't get their way: Can I get that in writing?
