Back to the future with Mayor Kelty
I say if Kelty can set Fort Wayne back 50 years, vote Kelty!!!
Fifty years ago Fort Wayne had two bus companies and three railroads supplying regular passenger service. We had Lincoln National Life Insurance, three GE plants, three copper wire plants, International Harvester, Zollner Piston, Fruehauf, Gladaux Refinery, Central Soya, two gas pump makers, etc. all paying good wages for that period.
Neighborhood groceries, hardware stores where the people knew you.
Neighborhood schools and all the kids in the family went to that school.
Downtown had two major department stores and four five & dimes. A drugstore and soda fountain on the corner of the major streets. Two meat markets.
Five different shoe stores. Dress shops, and a high end men’s store. Six hotels.
Four movie theaters. Several high-class restaurants.
It was the place to be. At least that’s how I remember it.
This lady is voting for a guy that wants to provide a market driven economy, but she wants to reverse economic trends and fight development? So, the generation that ushered in the decline of downtown, wants to revert back to the way things use to be? I find it absolutely hilarious that the people that brought about the 'build out, not up' and leveled most of our multi-story buildings for street level parking, are now reminiscing about the good old days.
I wonder poodle skirts and greasers will come back into style too- maybe we can have downtown sock hops at the drive in.

I dunno, I really read that as being sarcastic, based on the last sentence. But others tell me the writer was being serious. I really think, though, that those who long for a return to the downtown of 1957 should think again. Look at the pay scale of those who work in downtown today as compared with those who worked downtown 50 years ago. You can't tell me that the bankers, lawyers and insurance execs who work downtown in 2007 make less than the dress-shop sales clerks, butchers and soda jerks of yesteryear. Sometimes, change is good, folks.
Does this mean Marty McFly and Doc will soon be cruising around downtown FW in a DeLorean ???
And this town's officials wonder why there's a brain drain, a depletion of their creative class ...
