Alright, personally, I don’t know what would drive someone to run for public office – I think it takes someone with a certain level inflated ego to believe they are the best fit person to decide how other people should be living. But geez, lately in politicians have been taking more potshots at people than us.
Let it be known I actually agree with Dennis Turkette on this one. This shouldn’t be news worthy. But unfortunately, this is the level of politics FW has stooped to. People need to be reminded the birthday party was only an excuse to have the fundraiser for his republican campaign, not a personal friends/family birthday party. Matt Kelty is slowly exiling himself from the Republican party and creating an exclusive group of supporters while crying fowl that those he’s distancing himself from will not support him.
We are playing at playground level politics because we are being led down this immature political trail in which Turkette highlights with several quotes by the far liberal celebrity voting sect, and are prime examples of what drives me away from the far left as much as Matt’s conduct drives me away from the far right.
The funny thing is, is that FW is shaken by the fact that some republicans will be splitting their votes. I’m glad we’ve finally woken up and realized that automatically voting straight ticket for either party is in a lot of cases not only lazy, but an irresponsible vote.
Written today –
Kelty would not divulge who baked the cake, only saying it was a, “wonderful friend and supporter.”
Kelty said his 43d birthday party – which served as a fundraiser charging $43 per person – was a hectic event and he did not know about the cake until it was already cut and served.
“The photo I don’t think should have been put on my Web site,” Kelty said. “I don’t endorse the comments made on the cake.”
Now, if you think how a birthday party / fund raiser would go, you’d think Matt would be there ahead of time to survey the land, so if the cake was there, he would have noticed it before the party began. If the “wonderful friend and supporter” brought the cake with him/her, you’d think Kelty would greet him/her and would be presented with the cake. Also, if the cake was a surprise, then it would have been presented to him probably with trick candles, candles blown, relit, then blown again – hilarity ensues.
What I do know, is that leaders take ownership of mistakes and wrong doings, even when it may not be their fault. I realize an apology was mentioned in one of the articles, but the buck was passed and said, “A birthday cake that I did not create, commission, bake, or decorate has now been deemed newsworthy.” Matt doesn’t seem to know anything about anything when it comes to the cloud of uncertainty that is swirling around him. It is as if he’s taken advantage of plausible deniability before he’s gotten the chance to get into office.
Now I think we need to all take a step back and laugh about how stupid it is that a cake is the center of a political controversy. I felt a bit ridiculous writing about the political cake – the cake was actually pretty elaborate, can you imagine how long someone probably worked on the stupid thing?

I am SO TIRED of the "I am sorry if you were offended" fake apology. Look, Matt, I'm not sure how landing an outhouse on top of a political opponent (even if of the same party, and even if on a cake) is likely to NOT offend her. How about a REAL apology: "I am sorry that the cake was at the party - it offended people that we want to mend fences with and that is unacceptable." Something like that. But no, it's more "push the blame to others" by implying that their taking offense was their own choice, not a predictable response to a childish act.
4 weeks left of the campaign....remember to vote for Henry so that Kelty will just become a distant memory other than for a short time during his felony trial.
Who's Dennis?
Well said. And to follow up on 11:39, isn't it Dan Turkette?
There were two responses that would have been acceptable to me. (1) A sincere apology. (2) A statement that it was a joke and everybody should lighten up and get over it. But he didn't do either.
I think Dennis the Menace is Dan Turkette
To all the Kelty supporters - you need to step back and take a fresh look at your candidate. Sure, in the beginning he may have shown some promise, but as the mayoral race unfolds he has done nothing honorable; he talks a great game but when it comes to actions, he has shown himself to be dishonest, petty, devisive, uninformed, irresponsible, vengeful and irrational. And while I don't fully agree with Tom Henry, he has shown grace, intelligence and an understanding that the Mayor of Ft Wayne is expected to represent Ft Wayne in its entirety, Democrats,Republicans,Independents,Christians and non-Christian alike.Perhaps Matt should shoot for a position more appropriate to his skills and beliefs - church greeter perhaps (if, of course, the scary,Halloween-crazy grin doesn't frighten too many small children). Also, I do wnat to point out that Ft Wayne has many people who, regardless of party affiliation, vote the man, not the party. This election is different because so many of those who generally make this decision privately have come out publicly in support of the opposing party's candidate far in advance of the election.
