My Prayer

"Matthew 6:5-6: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men....when thou prayest, enter into thy closet and when thou has shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret...."

Faith permeates Kelty's campaign; but for Henry, ethics and morals are key.

I haven't seen Kelty in action, so I'm not sure if this is relevant. But many people too simply draw inferences from Mt 6:5-6. For example, in Mt 5:14-16 (earlier in the "Sermon on the Mount"), disciples of Jesus are also told to "let their light shine".

For a wonderful resource-- in general terms and especially for understanding the Sermon on the Mount, see: Dallas Willard's The Divine Conspiracy.

Yes, this verse is completely taken out of context. More terrible analysis from CFw.

Tom has a great quote at the end of the story.

Cheers

I love (and agree with) the quote from the spokesman for the diocese.

I knew there was something in the Bible that basically says " Don't show everyone you're praying just for your own gain." This is just what Kelty does. Look at me look at me - I'm a big Christian. Vote for me - vote for me - if you love God, you will vote for me.

Mr. Kelty , please stop doing this. I am a Christian, but I'm not voting for you and it makes me feel guilty. I know this is what you wanted, but it's wrong!!!

Keep your Christianity private and treat it with the dignity it deserves. You are parading it around like a kid with a new bike. Stop trying to garner votes this way. Have some class.

When Jesus spoke about showing light to the world, I believe he meant in the context of our actions and deeds and not so much in words. He was very critical of the religious/community leaders of his day for their hypocricy. I've found that most policians who wear their religion on their sleves tend to be hypocrites (their playbook is "the Prince" by Machiavelli). I am a deeply spirtual Catholic Christian and I am offended by these hypocrites!

What about the atheists, the Buddhists, the Unitarians, the humanists, the Jews, the agnostics, the Muslims in Fort Wayne?

Some of the most ethical, honest and upstanding people I know are the least religious. Their morals are a compact with their fellow citizens, not a public display of pompous faith angling for goodwill and to accumulate "treasures in heaven."

I'm sooo sick of the Kelty campaign saying that "God is on their side". So God is not a democrat and he doesn't listen to the prayers of Tom Henry and the rest of the Henry family? Why? Does God REALLY have time to side with either party? We are ALL God's children, are we not?

Give it a rest!

I'll be disappointed to discover, upon getting to heaven, that God is not a Republican.
