Recently Fort Wayne was ranked the #1 city of the minor league world. This comes as no surprise as FW has basically every minor league sports team imaginable.
We've got:
Men's and Women's soccer - Fort Wayne Fever
Women's Football - Fort Wayne Flash
Arena Football - Fort Wayne Fusion
Outdoor Football - Fort Wayne Flyers
Baseball - Fort Wayne Wizards
Hockey - Fort Wayne Komets
NEW Basketball - Fort Wayne Mad Ants
and even
Roller Derby - Fort Wayne Derby Girls
Any more? I'll add them.
So, its really not a surprise when we were voted the best minor league sports city in the nation. Since look at the developments we've made in the past couple of years. Fusion stepped up the conference and are now competing in more competitive AF2. We just brought back a basketball team to the NBA's developmental league and we are affiliated with two premier NBA teams (Pacers and Pistons). We're developing one of the best, if not the best single A baseball stadiums in the country for the Wizards, and its specs are up to AA standards.
NOW, unarguably the Komets are the most popular team that Fort Wayne has to offer. Our team doubled the attendance of any other team in our league.
Before I go on, let me say I love to be a spectator, although I'd rather be competing. I'm a terrible skater, so hockey is purely a visually entertaining sport for me. I have consistently gone to games throughout the Komet season (probably about 12 or so a season).
The Komet season has 38 home games a year, and currently we are in a league with 5 other opponents. So season ticket holders will see each of the other teams 8 times a piece during the season and if I continue watching 1/3 of the games, I'll see each team about 3 times apiece.
Will attendance stay at the current levels even though competition is dwindling? Will ticket prices stay at the current $18 for the good seats? Why haven't we joined a different league?
Does anyone know how the 6 team playoffs will work? Does everyone get to make it to the postseason?
For Being a 'Hockey town', it seems that we haven't invested in our passion.

too many teams for a market the size of fort wayne. komet attendance will drop considerably according to my calculations.

with love and lust.

I agree that the Komets should be moving up. But this will be the first year in a while that I have not renewed my season tickets. Do you think Franke is a little gunshy beacuse of the Komets poor experiance when they moved to the IHL a few years ago?
