Hmmmmmm........

He's a pretty nervy guy, that Matt Kelty fella.

Wow - Mr. Kelty seems to pushing the ole' "God is on my side, I can do no wrong" stance to another level.

This is quite alarming stuff. I find no wrong with being a religious, spiritual person. But, when it starts taking on the form of religious fanaticism, big red flags start to be raised.

I could care less if Mr. Kelty is a Christian or not. What I do care about is if he is able and competent to run the city of Fort Wayne. This is one of the many reasons why I feel he is not.

What is Mr. Kelty running for? I'm a Catholic, but this kind of stuff scares me

Separation of church and state Matt.

I was going to vote for him too.
He just lost (my vote and) the election.
What a smug, little man (and he's not a very good architect either).
Thank GOD for that!

And what's worse, here's a guy who as a local Catholic should know that it's the "Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese"-Fort Wayne comes first and it's a diocese not an archdiocese. As Bugs Bunny would say "what a 'maroon'...

I was already not voting for the guy, and this is partly the reason why. He advocates for smaller, less intrusive government...unless of course it has "morals and values". Then you can expect the government to be reaching into your bedroom AND your wallet.

Don't forget, this is the guy who opposed the smoking ordinance because he didn't think that government should interfere with businesses, then he turned around and said that he was going after all of the strip clubs and sex shops.

What a hypocrite.

The idea of this man running our city scares me. He seems totally oblivious to the fact that not everyone in FW is Christian. I find this kind of bible thumping to be quite repugnant - keep the religion out of it.

Yes, I think Matt isn't really sure what he is running for. Just take a look at his endorsements:

American Family Association of Indiana PAC

Indiana Family Action PAC

Indiana Right To Life PAC

Allen County Right To Life PAC

Sounds like this guy wants to be an abortion activist. Does he have any idea what a mayor actually does?

God Bless Matt Kelty, and may he also help you lost sheep find your way.

Well, considering you're a pack of wolves I doubt he can help but I'll say a prayer for you anyway..

If we don't pray to the same God we're lost sheep? What a bunch of crap. I pray for you and your narrow-mindedness and intolerance.

Ah, religion in government.

Look at all the good it's brought to the middle east!

(Among other places.)

This is really scary

I wonder if Kelty prayed before he pulled the wool over everyones eyes about his finances. Does he really think he did no wrong only because he is the annointed, blesses, holier than thou Kelty?

Sure is a lot of hoopla for a mayoral election in Hooterville.

You people seriously need to get over your fanatic Matt Kelty hatred. He will find you!

“God?” Asked one of the minor seraphim, peeking around the door into God’s office.

“Yeah, what,” God said, leaning back in his chair. “Dr. Phil is going to be on in five minutes, and I don’t want to miss the show, because he's talking about stress at work.”

“Well, it’s just that—you might want to read this,” the angel said, clutching a piece of printer paper. “It’s just—there’s a problem,” he said, staring at the paper so as to not be intimidated by the Creator of the Universe. “It seems that one of your followers is saying that Fort Wayne is…well—he’s saying that you’ve claimed the city as your land. He’s saying…he’s saying you own it.”

“What?” God said. “Are you serious?”

“Yes,” the angel said, trembling. “But I thought that you had—“

“I gave up on Fort Wayne decades ago!” God said. “Haven’t looked at it since.”

“Is there anything we can do?” the angel said. “Should we send down a visitation or something, let them know they’re all doomed?”

“Nah,” God said, “if they can’t see it by now, I don’t know what to do.”

“Yeah,” the angel said, “you’re right.”

“I tend to be,” God said. “Thank you for letting me know about this. And you’re welcome to stay and watch Dr. Phil if you want, but if not I’ve gotta to kick you out of my office, cause I can’t hear the TV with the door open, okay?”

As a mayor he can not do much to change the social values or structure of the citizens of Fort Wayne. He will be more in charge of planning and watching over finances.

I don't get why you are all so worried about what he can do with religion as only a mayor.

Now if he runs for an office where his religion comes more in to play then I will be worried right along with you.

"As a mayor he can not do much to change the social values or structure of the citizens of Fort Wayne. He will be more in charge of planning and watching over finances."

Right. That is why people are concerned: because the mayor isn't supposed to be a religious office. Rather than talking about how he would be a good administrator for the city, or his practical experience that would make him a good mayor, Kelty continues to use these religious statements. I guess he feels that will appeal to some people (probablythose people who don't really know what the mayor does). That is frightening - not only is it pandering but it demonstrates either incompetence or a lack of caring about whether he himself is competent.

Plus it is a way of saying that he intends to spend a lot of his time as mayor (God forbid, pun intended) doing stuff like rooting out sin, or making everyone get married or go to church, or whatever he plans to do, rather than run an efficient city.

Plus it's just wrong.

When I want a pastor, I go to church. I don't need a mayor who thinks it's his job to be the city's Super Pastor.

Fanatic is a great word to describe Matt which is likely why many fear him (not hate him).

From Ron Swart: "Knowing Kelty as I do, I have to believe that in his reporting of his finances, he truly believed he was reporting his required forms properly. "

That's called being NAIVE sister - something I don't want my mayoral candidate to be. Any dunce knows you need to be real careful with campaign finances.

Anonymous said...

He wasn't being Naive - he was being dishonest. He was being naive about his possibilities of being caught.

Let's not forget that this isn't the first time that Mr. Kelty has ran for public office.

I vote Kelty for Mayor

Because Kelty is going against the current orthodoxy, which says to keep your religion tucked away inside your heart and head. Break that rule, and it's amazing how quickly "liberal" people want to clamp down on freedom of speech.

Dan Turkette said...

Liberal people? How about ANY of us who appreciate the idea of people checking their religious zealotry at the door on their way into office? Does that make us liberal? Since when did conservatism stand for "freedom to use any publicly elected office as a pulpit?" Publicly elected officials are supposed to uphold the constitution and the laws, not use them for their own fanatical agendas.

There is a home for people who want religion to dictate government, it's called the Middle East.

I did *not* post that last comment. You people amaze me.
