My City of Walkways

Below is my proposed plan for "Walkway World" in Downtown Fort Wayne.

After you park in a covered parking garage, you can walk to every downtown attraction under the cover of solid glass.

This includes the proposed "Kelty Glass Dome" which will cover The Landing.

And how will we pay for this?

dont forget that the walkways need to have conveyor belts so people dont have to strain themselves too much by walking around in them

Good point, Anon 1:08. And Jimmy Dean, Matt has said that the private sector will pay for the Glass Dome. I know of a lot of businesspeople who are simply dying to get into the Glass Dome business. Glass Domes are the next biotech.

The Glass Dome sector is booming these days and there is no sign of a stop in growth.

Does anyone have a copy of the glass dome comment?

I think Mr. Kelty made it in a newspaper.

Anon 1:08,

Who needs conveyor belts when I can start my own "Rent-A-Segway" business downtown?

I don't care where the walkways are, can we still close off the streets under them?

From FWO interview with Matt Kelty, April 07 :

"I would love to see a development -- and I'm producing renderings to demonstrate this -- where you take Columbia Street and build a superstructure attached to the facades on both sides of Columbia Street and put the whole thing under a glass enclosure."

What?? I thought that was a CFW joke.

He really did say that?

Anonymous said...

yes he really did say that, and nobody has seen any designs since. it must have been as much of a joke for him too

CFW, can you get the drawings?

No wonder his business is failing.

Speaking of Matt Kelty, check this out:

Matt at the upcoming Grabill Parade

Yep CFW, sorry, that was a blatant plug for my blog. But I think you'll get a kick out of the photos.

Can't you just imagine all the "rodent runs" or "gerbil tubes" with people running from one side to the other that we could have in our downtown. Really exciting, for a zoo. John B. Kalb

Maybe this dome idea is the same as Genesis Fort Wayne - start a new civilizaion under a glass dome.

Yeah and all you Kelty haters will be locked out after the coronation.

Kelty was talking more specifically about enclosing the Landing area of Columbia Street. It is a unique idea. City-County building employees could go there for lunch. Downtown visitors could park in the garage and walk to the Landing. Sure would cost a lot less than Harrison Square and provide year-round dining/shopping in the downtown area.

And it would end up being entirely publicly funded and publicly maintained, and not spur any new businesses on Columbia Street.

But it won't be Harrison Square so by definition the anti-HS people are in favor of it, regardless of how ridiculous it is.

No. It would be entirely privately funded by the businesses themselves. All of those businesses would specifically benefit. Sure they may try to ask for public funding (worst that could happen would be the City saying 'no'). In the end, the good people of Fort Wayne wouldn't stand for it - and they shouldn't.

Okay, 11:55, how many businesses have signed up for this?

ZERO!
