Following the Republican Primary mayoral race, I've got a few questions about Nelson Peters. His stances have been anything but clear.
1. Smoking ban - for a complete smoking ban, but was for the Opt out.
2. County government consolidation - This one I'm not sure about, I forget, but I think he wanted to commission a study instead of taking a stance.
3. FWCS improvement - I believe that he vocally opposed the improvement, left before the vote, then signed the remonstrance.
4. HS - Supported the project, then called for a referendum. I still haven't found answers on who he called the referendum as - County Commissioner, private citizen, or mayor hopeful. The letters were written on Commissioner paper - which the Commissioner deals with unincorporated Allen County and HS is completely a city deal.
Am I missing anything?

So you're a Kelty supporter then?
CFW, this is not a defense of Peters, but rather a clarification. Commissioners do not just deal with the unincorporated areas of Allen County. They are the Commissioners for the entire county and sometimes their powers extend into the incorporated areas. That's why cities like Fort Wayne and New Haven opted out of the County's smoking ordinance.
On a City project involving private land, the Commissionners shouldn't have any involvement though (unless there is some county funding tied to it). For example, if HS required the construction of a new bridge and the County had to pay for it, then I could understand their involvement.
Matt has never held elected office, therefore has no track record. He can say whatever he wants.
Have to run, Matt's NFL agent is on the line...
I stand corrected is the 'primarily' from the website that I missed - "As the legislative branch, they pass ordinances that primarily affect unincorporated (not within a city or town) areas of the county."
But what you are saying is that Peter's was wrong to use Commissioner letterhead on his proposal for a referendum for HS?
Also, as a consequence from the smoking opt out, I do not know what the county smoking ordinance is anymore. I was under the impression that FW was adopting a ordinance in which the surrounding areas (including New Haven) are opting out.
I'm saying that just because the project was in an unicorporated area doesn't mean that there couldn't have been any involvement from the County's legislative branch. But in this particular case, there was no reason for Peters to be involved (unless I missed something). Therefore it was mayoral hopeful Peters that called for the referendum. He shouldn't have used the county's letterhead in my opinion. Who knows, maybe he'll use that as an excuse to merge city and county government. "Well I just can't keep things separated so we might as well consolidate."
The County Commissioners passed a smoking ordinance. Fort Wayne and New Haven opted out of the County's ordinance. Fort Wayne passed it's own, more restrictive ordinance. New Haven is considering it's own ordinance. Fun fun.
It's possible to not be supportive of both Kelty and Peters.
Wish we had better candidates.
Wish we had better candidates.
You mean like Tom Henry?
Change Fort Wayne - we are going to need to get into a remedial government course.
Correction - left out the word "you" after the word "get" in the last comment.
Yes, like Tom Henry.
Nelson peters wants to take your guns away. Its a sure bet Roach wont. Mayor Helmke annexed your in aboite, st, joe, pine valley, etc. Peters is his close pal, and co-conspirator.
read change fort wayne blog! thanks!Peters chief patron is paul helmke, and family- brady gun grabbers.constitutional traitors.
and your cigarettes.( go smoke outside)and your pot (smoke that outside too- dont get busted) and expand the city bureaucracy by adding all kinds of flatulent bells and whistles, a host of likely out-of- state-consultants, and patronage cronies.
and raise your taxes- watch the growth of city budget to further grow from its 100 million in 1990 to 200 million today.(double in 10 years. Dont blame Kelty- he's never raised your taxes, but knows local govt.
expect the city legal business to be outsourced to the Helmke Law offices( no-bid contrct?)to funnel your tax dollars into the Helmke- bgun grabbing, big government perpetuating machine.
expect Payne Brown to pop up again lending "diversity" to the reconstituted public safety director-incompetent/crooked cop hiring machine
and who will be the new police chief? and whats peters view on merging the sheriff and FWPD, like they have successfully done in Indy?
And a whole cornocopia of re-inventing the helmke wheel/back to the future so-called progress.
you taxes will go up(but not your property taxes- they always say)
lots of more grandiose "downtown re-vitalization projects- hey business is slow- and lots of rich fatcats in aboite have to keep up with the mc-coys- hummers, kids college funds, alimony, child support, all the trappings of JR's "Dallas"
If you are a total nihilist, there's no better way to screw up this city any worse than electing Nelson Peters Mayor. review this Litany.
then sign that petition to put rocah on the ballot, this fall.
I pledge to dissolve the city's charter/Articles of incorporation, kinda like hitting the off putton on your TV, and watching the little white dot fade to black;
And dump everything into the county, and states hands- all the unfunded liabilities-police-fire-pension; all the unfunded bond issues- Harrison Square; and every other penny swiped from our hands; The complete billion dollar sewer separation project, and so on.
And then the only way the County and state will be able to pay for this mother of all financial crisies will be to turn FTW into the next Las Vegas- think financial mushroom cloud-dumped into My Man Mitch, Sen' Long, Wyss, Moses, Giaquinta, and all the rest-
then stand back and watch the fireworks. They will all have to dig deep to find the cash. The taxpayers will revolt if the Statehouse tries to raise your taxes. So what does that leave?
turning indiana into the next off-shore(?) banking /business haven; and some really creative, cutting edge strategies to turn this state around.
all with a single swipe of a Mayoral pen, and 9 willing accomplices on city council.
naah. never happen. FTw is "circling the drain, in a long, drawn out flush. think ross perot. "the giant sucking sound. see- I told you so.."
