My This just keeps on getting better

Check out these Klassic Kelty Quotes from a Journal Gazette Story dated January 18th.

The self-appointed underdog in this year’s Fort Wayne Republican mayoral primary self-financed the start of his campaign with almost $150,000 in loans, according to campaign finance reports filed Wednesday.

Matt Kelty gave his campaign loans of $140,000 and $8,000 on Dec. 27, accounting for 86 percent of the total money he raised in 2006. Because he believes he is the underdog in the race against Allen County Commissioner Nelson Peters, Kelty said he needs money to project his voice and vision.

“I would never ask someone to invest in an endeavor that I was not willing to invest in myself,” Kelty said.

Other than himself, Kelty’s largest contributors were Fred Rost, who gave $5,200 and Glenna Jehl, who gave $1,500. Jehl is Kelty’s campaign manager.

Peters wouldn’t comment directly on the fact that Kelty financed much of his own account but said he hoped to raise $250,000 to $400,000 more by the May primary. Kelty said his goal is to raise $250,000 by the primary.

Not to be picky, but you really should call them Klassic Kelty Kwotes.

Not to be confused with Klassic Kelty Kwips.

Or Klassic Kelty PrevariKations. Sorry - that's the best I could do.

It will be interesting if the Secretatry of Truth, Mike Sylvester, takes Kelty to task for these flagrant violations. Rest assured that if Nelson Peters, Tom Henry or John Crawford did the same thing, Sylvester would have posted with 15 point red font by now. Is silense is deafening.

SYLVESTER!!! is a CPA.

He should be all over this

Sylvester, when will you be submitting your FOIA request. I know Kelty is not in office yet, but how about a premptive FOIA to greet him on day 1.

I can't help but wonder if this is part of Kelty's "Genesis Fort Wayne" plan he has for the city.

Give Mike a break. I really feel sorry for all the folks who were duped by The Matt into thinking that he was honest, bright, and forthright.

AWB's post in defense of Kelty is equal parts ignorant and pathetic. Are you kidding me? Apparently AWB does not understand that his little "home buying example" was not covered by CAMPAIGN FINANCING LAWS!!

For what its worth, AWB most likely made misreps on those loan forms which almost always ask if you borrowed your money for a down payment.

Birds of A Feathe flock together.

Anonymous said...

Is Kelty expecting a $150,000 bonus at the end of his mayoral term to pay off the loans similar to AWB and his house?

"duped" is exactly right! I cant believe the way people have fallen for this act.

Anonymous said...

Regardless of what the Election Board determines, this was clearly a deceptive practice on Kelty's part. I sincerely believe this was election fraud and should be handled as such, however Kelty seems to get away with questionable acts.

What is AWB's blog addres...I need to see it for myself..

If we put this dishonest individual in the mayor's office then we should be awarded a lifetime achievement award for the dumbest city in America

A big red flag (or Crusades Flag, if you prefer) should be the fact that these contributions could have been made directly to the campaign. They would not have violated any limits or any other campaign law. The ONLY reason for handling the contributions this was to HIDE the identity of the donors, to avoid visibility. This is NOT a quality I look for in a public servant.

Kelty Knowingly filed a false report = Class D Felony. I dont know how you get around it.

"The ONLY reason for handling the contributions this was to HIDE the identity of the donors, to avoid visibility"

how else could matt claim he put up his own money if it was known not to come from him?

Anonymous said...

greg--I am not sure what you are unclear about. "How else could he have handled.." ?
He could have had the money donated directly to the campaign. That would have been the honest and transparent way of handling it.
The intention of pretending not to know about the Zogby poll and of handling the 'loan' this way was to hide how deep Fred was in this push for the mayor's office. I don't think I have ever seen anything backfire in a more spectacular way--now you can't think of Kelty's campaign at all without linking Fred to it.
Poor judgement (again), poor understanding (again), poor example to set (again) or just a 'anything to win' attitude--take your pick but Kelty has a string of performance issues in this young race that should turn anyone away.

I'm an avid Matt Kelty supporter. Please don't feel sorry for me or those like me. I remain steadfast in my support for Matt and confident he will weather this storm.

Dave-You are a staunch Kelty supporter...I would like to ask why that is. Really, I am not trying to be snide or negative at all. I would just like to know Why Kelty? I know that he appeals to those against Harrison Square and the Smoking Ordinance. But, if you have other reasons I would really like to be better informed. Why would he be a good mayor for Ft Wayne?

How ironic that so many bloggers pass judgment on someone else's integrity, and yet maintain anonymity within their own posts. Exactly why will the "anonymous" poster not disclose their real name if they stand behind their view? Is it concern over repercussions? Are they afraid what their "friends" might think about them if they knew?

In the interest of "honesty" and "transparency" let me say...

My name is Dave MacDonald, and I approve this message.

Anonymous-

I'm not offended by your question.

I support Matt because I have the benefit of knowing the man and his family for several years. I believe he brings a fresh perspective to the city's executive office that is desperately needed. Notwithstanding the campaign finance questions, I respect him for his integrity. I'm sure he has the "dirt" on his competitors, and yet, I've never heard him whisper an unkind word about anyone (he refers to Mr. Peters as a "Prince of a man" and "a friend" - Mr. Henry is also "a friend".)

This integrity is his greatest asset, but perhaps a liability as well. Some supporters may elevate this character trait so high that it becomes an easy target for raising doubt - just show the man to be even remotely dishonest and his supporters will brush him off as "just another politician."

Although I do not know him personally, I do respect Tom Henry because of the opinion of him held by friends I trust. I understand him to be a loving family man of good character and appreciate his service to the people of Fort Wayne for many years.

However like Mr. Peters, Mr. Henry touts his considerable "experience" of 20 years as a reason to support him. And yet, our dear city's troubles persist, businesses continue to leave (not helped by City Council's recent hostile attempts to dictate how they will control them), our current liabilities like the pension obligations remain unfunded (promises unkept = dishonesty), and on and on. If "experience" means continuing to do the same thing but expecting different results, I believe another word is more appropriate.

I'm a registered Republican (lately ashamed to admit that), but moreover a Conservative. I think it is disengenuous for Mr. Shine to state:

"it wasn’t the party’s role to question legitimate candidates about their campaigns during a primary because it could be construed as the party taking a side in the race. He said the seven other mayoral candidates – both Republican and Democratic – could have made it an issue during the primary."

Clearly the local Republican party did exactly that in its support for Mr. Peters. Who's not being honest here?

That being said, Matt inspires my wife and me and others like us--young professionals who have lived and worked in the area our whole lives and want to secure this city's future for our children. We really never paid much attention to local politics until we met Matt and learned about his vision and core philosophy. For us this means that each of us is asked to bring our own strengths for the benefit of our great city.

Thanks for asking.

Dave

Dave-thank you for your thoughtful and insightful answer. As someone who has been following politics for a long time, it is sometimes hard to get the perspective of others in a different place in the process. The qualities you list for Mr. Kelty are admirable and worthy of support.
We bloggers should remember the importance of the electoral process above all. In the long run I probably will not vote for the same candidate in the fall, but it is certainly good when anyone draws citizens into the process. Taking the time to consider the candidates and then casing a vote is ultimately the most important part making the process work for all of us. I applaud you for your efforts and thank you for your answer.

PS..Everyone probably has their own reasons for not 'signing' their name. For me, it just clouds the issue. Readers assume motives or influences or discount/credit the opinion because they 'know' the name (or not). It really has no bearing on the opinion being voiced and only detracts from the message in my opinion.

There are twenty-five comments written here all being read by the same ten or twenty people. Letters to the editor need to be written so these questionable actions by Kelty aren't swept under the rug. Let his desciples know that many are not pleased with the way he has handled himself. A guy who can't do the basics correctly shouldn't be our next mayor.

There's Kelty and then there is Kelty. You need to know them both before you jump on to this bandwagon.

Anonymous said...

I have found that most people who truly know Kelty and have had business dealings with him, think he would be an absolutely awful mayor.

Anonymous said...

Well, Kelty has his people writing letters to the editor blaming Peters and Shine for this whole fiasco. What a surprise! I thought it was funny that in this weeks Sunday paper, the reporters reported that Nelson Peters had no comment. Slow news day I guess.

Anonymous said...

Kelty's cronies have been blaming just about everyone BUT Kelty. Yeah, Peters and Shine MADE Kelty misrepresent his campaign finances...I'm sure people are intelligent enough to see through this. At least I certainly hope so! Blaming this "mishap" on anyone but Matt is laughable.

For an issue that is so "cut and dry" in the Kelty camp, they are sure bringing in the heavy hitter lawyers. Looks like there may be some concern a brewin.

Doesnt the fact that the same person who paid for the poll (and asked for it not to be disclosed) go to the "intent" issue as it relates to failure to disclose the loan?
