My New FW Tourism Guide

Ever wonder what outsiders think about FW?

A lot of people don't know that IU medical students can be placed in IPFW for the first two years of Med School. True story. These are some of the brightest temporary FW residents we have, so I take their opinions somewhat seriously.

I had a friend that claimed she cried when she had been placed here instead of Indy. She appealed, but lost.

Here's a 'freshman guide' to those 'unfortunate' med students that are placed here at IPFW. Feel free to skim, but read the Social section. I think the title including 'Survival' speaks volumes.

READ IT HERE

Here are some gems:
  • Called the “World’s Finest Children’s Zoo,” but since med students tend to be adults, the excitement in seeing an orangutan and hand feeding goats may be long gone.
  • Snickerz Comedy Club – Don’t expect Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, or Lewis Black—you can expect Dustin Diamond, aka “Screech”—who seems to visit multiple times a year.
  • There are enough Super Wal-Marts and Meijer’s to make any NASCAR fan happy
  • Broadripple II – True story: the bar used to be called Broadripple, then it shut down; the new owners couldn’t think of a good name, so they just added the “2” to the end. This is the kind of stuff you’ll have to deal with in Ft. Wayne. Large bar/dance club with horrid drinks, but good specials, $5 cover
  • Peanuts – This place is just a dive, and is a good place to go to be around people who will make you feel better about yourself. Close to campus in the Marketplace at Cantebury.
Paints a lukewarm image of our town, some highlights and lowlights.

Its funny, when I first moved back here from Austin, I read that. It had been about 8 years since I had hung out in Ft Wayne prior to that. Of course, I didn't feel much better after reading that.

Perfect description of Peanuts.

You're not only a planner, but a musician too? Fantastic! Can we book you to play at our next party?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Great Stuff.

You can add Peter's Water Park in there too.

No, I'll be playing on the street corner for all of those wealhty young professionals who are going to live in the condos at HS.

I bet all those buisnesses would be interested to know that IPFW holds such high opinions of them.

Yeah, it would be a lot better to pretend that Fort Wayne is just teeming with exciting options.

Ok, I have a solution for those poor, poor med students.

Rather than invest $63 million on HS, let's renovate the existing baseball stadium, close Parnell and build a pestrian mall with bars, shops, etc. HH Gregg can be torn down and Ruby Tuesday can be incorporated into a new mult-tenant structure. We can then connect the area with IPFW by building various residential projects like condos and apartments, academic buildings, campus open space and pedestrian bridges. Memorial Coliseum can be turned into the the new IPFW arena.

Then we can build a monorail to connect IPFW's expanded campus with Parkview North/Dupont Hospital and Lutheran's main campus. We don't want those poor med students to have to drive because they can't afford cars anyway.

Then we can build a new Coliseum downtown and connect that area with light rail. Downtown would then have to be connected to the airport, which would have to be torn down and relocated out next to I-69.

Allen County's population in 1990 was 300,836

Allen County's population in 2000 was 331,849

Allen County's estimated population in 2006 was 347,316

We have GOT to build a stadium to stop this staggering decline in population. I mean, it is CLEAR that people are leaving Fort Wayne in droves. Build it now or Fort Wayne is DOOMED!!!!!!!

Are you a member of the Allen County GOP/Status Quo club?

Fort Wayne is JUST FINE

Park or Die said...

Allen County gained 10.3% in population from 1990 to 2000.

That ranks 30th.....in the State of Indiana.

Not very encouraging numbers, inplanner

Fort Wayne's apparent population explosion is simply because of annexation. Look at school district enrollments...it really paints a better picture.

But since INPlanner is so full of knowledge, I'm sure he already knew that. He was just bluffing to see if we were paying attention.

He knows that we might actually pay attenttion to things like....well...Fort Waynes piss-poor job creation rate:

0.59% in 2006.

Yeah, Fort Wayne's just experiencing staggering growth!

Andrew, pay attention, INplanner listed population numbers for Allen County, not Fort Wayne.

Park or Die is correct - nearly everywhere in the US has experienced population growth, and our growth is very paltry by comparison.

More frightening is the decline in average wages relative to the national average.

Andrew Kaduk said...

Ok, so he listed Allen County numbers. Why the hell does that matter? The actual in-city population hasn't moved at nearly that speed...and I think that's the problem here. Flight to the "suburbs," if you want to call them that.

Good point, Andrew - the community's population IS much more spread out than it was a generation ago. This has ramifications for public expense (i.e., more roads per person, more water lines per customer, etc.) as well as environmental concerns.

One of the main benefits of HS is that it starts to turn around the trend of private investment being all in the suburbs.

Anon 9:35, you'll get no argument from me on your points.

The point that I was trying to make is that proponents of HS have depicted the project as "Fort Wayne's Only Hope". It could be a piece of the downtown revitalization puzzle, but Fort Wayne (Allen County) certainly isn't on it's last breathe.

INplanner,

You're right. Fort Wayne AND Allen County will always be here, but just being here and existing really isn't the debate.

Thanks though.
