We have had young mayors, old mayors, short mayors and tall mayors, but has fort wayne ever had a truly wacky mayor? I have this vision of Benny Hill music playing in the background on the 9th floor.
Peters most recent comments and actions, kind of remind me of Kerry in 04. Eventhough they are from different parties, there are some similarities. They are both noted for their calm, level-headed demeanor, but somtimes in life it's a good idea to cut loose.
Just like the basketball coach getting tossed on purpose to inspire his team, Peters needs to show some emotion in this race against Kelty. The press conference for the referendum on HS was an attempt, but I think his campaign under-estimated the intelligence of the voters. They know that it will be a shot in the dark to get this on the ballot in Nov, so late in the game.
So what can Peters do to distinguish himself from Kelty ? I think his campaign should focus on Peter's wealth of experience: his years spent presiding as commissioner, serving on county council, his private sector experience, and also his award for "Outstanding First Term Commissioner". I would hammer away daily on this if I were in the Peters campaign.
But I'm not. Just someone looking from the outside in. And my view is Kelty wants the job so bad he can taste it. This scares me.

As for Kelty, what "views does he stand behind"? The man doesn't stand for anything.
The scariest thing about Kelty possibly getting into the mayoral position is that he has NO governmental experience. Hell, he doesn't even know the campaign laws, much less how city government works. With all the changes that Fort Wayne is about to face in the next year or so, I do not want a mayor who is LEARNING how city government works, I want someone with experience, so that he may concentrate on matters at hand.
Frankly, Kelty is idealistic and appears to be living in fantasy land. Though some may not like Peters' call for a referendum, he is most certainly the only candidate qualified and competent for the mayoral position.
